Opinion: Is A Complimentary Upgrade To Delta Comfort+ Worth It?

Like many Delta Medallion members, I value the perk of complimentary upgrades to be one of the best benefits. On 9/10 flights, I will be upgraded from my standard Main Cabin seat to Delta Comfort+ Seat. As a Gold Medallion member, these clear 72 hours in advance, depending on availability. Unfortunately, any upgrade I've ever been given to First Class won't clear until boarding time.

So the question begs, is it worth it for you to be upgraded to Delta Comfort+?

Let's break down the benefits of a Delta Comfort+ seat over a traditional Main Ca

bin one. Delta treats Comfort+ as a totally different class, akin to Premium Economy. Other Legacy Carrier just treat it like an upgrade on their Economy fare, similarly how Delta charges a fee for preferred seating on an aisle or window further up, or an exit row. According to the Delta Air Lines website,
Spacious Seat:Delta Comfort+ gives you space, with up to 3 more inches of legroom on domestic flights and up to 4 more inches on intern…

Deal Alert: Round Trip Economy (Main Cabin) Tickets to Zurich from $422

With the increase in competition of Low Cost Carriers across the Atlantic Ocean, often times mainline carriers will do their best to match the fares. Right now, Delta is offering great deals to many destinations in Europe, including the follow fares to Zurich.

You can fly in July for a roundtrip cost of $549.

Or for even less in August, for just over $422.
All of these flights are operated by Delta's A330-200, which feature a comfortable 2-4-2 layout in their Main Cabin.

Remember, Delta recently implemented bag fees on Basic Economy fares for transatlantic fights that usually equal the cost to "upgrade" back to Main Cabin. Unless you only plan on traveling with a carry on and personal item, you should definitely book a standard Main Cabin fare. In addition, you will also get to select a seat, which can really make or break these flights.
If you're interested in splurging a little, Delta One Business Class fares are consistently at $2,566 for many roundtrip travel dates o…

Review: Delta Airlines Main Cabin (Economy Class) 767-300ER JFK to AMS

About six months before this trip, one of my best friends and I were trying to book a trip basically anywhere. Given the popular vacation week we had selected, heading to Amsterdam proved to be the best valued flight we could find.
Flight Details:Delta Air Lines Flight 48
New York (JFK) to Amsterdam (AMS)
Depart: Thursday, February 15 7:30 PM
Arrive: Friday, February 16 9:10 AM
Aircraft: Boeing 767-300ER
Seat: 21B (Main Cabin)
Booking:After doing extensive research, my friend and I decided on Amsterdam. The cash price for our ticket came out to a reasonably priced $573.36. You can see based on the pricing, that the bulk of the ticket was actually a carrier imposed surcharge, which luckily still counts towards MQDs and the miles you earn. For my one segment to Amsterdam, I earned 100% of the miles flown, which came out to 3,644 MQMs. I earned 243 MQDs. Like many flights, I am not as concerned about MQDs due to the waiver from the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Card from American Express. For redeem…

Review: China Airlines Economy Class 777-300ER TPE to DPS

I was pretty nervous going into a six hour flight in Economy on a 777-300ER set up in a 3-4-3 configuration. Once again, China Airlines exceeded my expectations and made this journey quite comfortable.
Flight Details:China Airlines 771
Taipei (TPE) to Denpasar/Bali (DPS)
Depart: Thursday, August 3 9:15 AM
Arrive: Thursday, August 3 2:40 PM
Aircraft: Boeing 777-300ER
Seat: 60H (Economy Class)
Booking:After watching the price fluctuate drastically on our round trip from Taipei to Bali (sometimes as high as $1,000), we finally saw it drop to about $510 round trip. When we booked, the majority of the plane was blocked and the only seats left were towards the rear of the second economy cabin. We selected seats across the aisle from each other. I credited the miles to Delta SkyMiles since I will likely never earn enough miles through China Airlines' own program. I was more concerned about earning MQMs to receive a higher status. I earned 50% of the miles flown, which came out to 1,182 MQMs. I…

Review: China Airlines Premium Business Class 777-300ER JFK to TPE

To say that I had an unbelievably pleasant journey would be an understatement. Both segments in China Airlines new Premium Business Class on their 777-300ER aircraft were flawlessly executed with professional service and attention.
Flight Details:China Airlines 11
New York (JFK) to Taipei (TPE)
Depart: Friday, July 28 1:35 AM
Arrive: Saturday, July 29 5:30 AM
Aircraft: Boeing 777-300ER
Seat: 21A (Business Class)
Booking:My fiancee and I needed to be in Bali for a wedding the first week of August. When looking at mileage flights to Bali, the flights most commonly came up with a connection in Taipei. In order to save a decent amount of miles, we booked a round trip through Taipei and paid cash for the remaining flights, giving ourselves a layover in Taipei on the way back, too. While the cash fare for this fight came out to well over $3,500, we were each able to redeem 160,000 Delta SkyMiles + $38.06 for the over 30 hours we would spend in China Airlines new Business Class. Flying with Delta …
