Air Europa Will Exit SkyTeam Amongst IAG Purchase

Dreamliner, boeing, 787-9

Two can play this game. Following Delta's blindsiding move to purchase part of LATAM and rip it out of Oneworld alliance, IAG is doing the same. IAG, parent company of British Airways and Iberia amongst others, will purchase Air Europa and pull it from SkyTeam. IAG will spend a staggering 1 Billion Euros to acquire the company.

This move will give IAG complete control of Madrid Airport, due to full service carrier Iberia and low cost carrier Vueling's hub there. Air Europa will be billed as cost conscious carrier, like Aer Lingus.

This deal is, of course, contingent on regulatory approvals, which is often difficult in the European Union. There's been talk of Air Europa opening up domestic service within Brazil and with the loss of LATAM from Oneworld, this makes sense.
